I recently ranted about a dual monitor fad , and received strenuous comments to the effect that I was misguided . Well, I’ve come to a circumstance where I am benefiting greatly from having a second monitor set up. In my situation, I’m doing a bunch of remote teaching and coaching and I’m able to see what’s going out on the one monitor, whilst working — or checking Oppo — on the other. So yeah, you told me so. I can’t even with one monitor anymore. My work really needs a big monitor too as I do a lot of drawing and big ass spreadsheets .

dual crts sounds scary
actually i still rock one monitor at home but it’s a 1440p one for my main desktop and 1920x1200 for the 2nd PC

The one thing I NEVER want to see is “Nibby’s rig”, OK?

Oooooo, do you play runescape? The mobile version oldschool runescape is pretty fun.

Having two monitors at work is a godsend.

If you’re ever in a screen sharing environment, it’s basically a requirement. You need one screen to share and one for confidential stuff. I have my laptop open for mainly email, but a 27" main monitor for work. I’ve found this more useful than having 2 x 24" (with laptop closed) . And a lot fewer wires!

Why have tw o monitors when you can have one HUGE one?
(please note laptop is for camera use only, I’m not paying $200 for a god damn webcam).

Single monitor for me thanks.

I have a 30" (3D CAD) and a 20" turned vertical for reading d ocs/email/Teams. They both come out to be about the same physical height. Two mon it or s is a must if you’re doing 3 D work IMO.

I’ve run dual CRTs before - it was interesting...
I’m still running a single monitor at home - I can’t bring myself to replace my Dell Ultrasharp 2208WPF as it still works great. I’ve got dual ASUS VS 248s at work and it’s pretty nice.

Dual monitors is out . The right way now is triple monitors (plus lava lamp) !
I took that pic before I made the trip to the office to retrieve a missing cable.

It’s easier to snap windows to useful places on a multi-screen setup. Also those ultrawide screens tend to be pretty low density (mostly targeted at games who prefer refresh rates to resolution).

Seconded!

Dual monitor plus the laptop FTW!

Ooo. Vertical orientation! Now that’s truly cutting edge!

Snapping is super-useful and underrated.

Now THAT looks like a proper hacker’s setup. You just need to lower the lighting in the room to the appropriate level to complete the look .

Most of the time I have two monitors on one machine and a separate laptop up, so I can be logged into various things as different users, or test something on multiple platforms (one is a mac, other is windows), or to have different email/chat/zoom up on various screens. I basically don’t use paper at work so my whole desk / work life is on screens.

It can go too far though. I have dual 27s for work and they are 16:9. It's so side it's kind of hard to take it all in and have a readable resolution

I’m on to quads.

I had a three-monitor setup for a few years, so I get it ....but I went widescreen last year and never looked back. Not sure how often you are ‘ snapping’ windows, but it’s not hard to arrange them on a single screen.

Wait... Are you telling me that you do gia nt spreadsheets devoted to donkeys, or just spreadsheets devoted to giant donkeys?

No, DUEL MONITORS! Make the monitors fight to the death! I wanna see some monitor mayhem! Only one can remain!

In software development and systems engineering, two monitors per computer is a must. And I have two computers for work.
There are times I wish I had one more monitor for each machine, but now that I’m working from home, I glad I don’t.

I used to have two 24" 1080p monitors...one landscape and one portrait to develop software . Put the editor on the portrait screen and run the program on the landscape screen. Now I use a 4K 55 inch HDR Samsung as my main monitor and one of the 24" 1080p monitors alongside it.

I’m feeling it with like 1 1/2 monitors right now. I have my work laptop hooked up to a spare 32" TV , but the laptop screen is may be 14". It’s a major PITA when I’m in spreadsheets and I can’t even see what I need to see and have to drag it to the big monitor.

Windows Power Toys lets you configure snap zones of whatever size you want and put them wherever you want on screen. I have it setup so that I can have a 16:9 window on either side with a vertical window on the unused space. Then windows native ly handles 50/50 and corner splits.
You don’t give up pixel density on an ultrawide either. My 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide is roughly the same pixel density as a 27" 2560x1440 16:9 monitor, I just get extra width compared to the 16:9.

I loved the dual monitor life, then I discovered ultrawides and am never going back. Been using an LG at work for the last 5 months or so and just picked up this Acer for home last weekend after discovering that doing work on a single 1080p monitor was pretty miserable.
![]() 04/09/2020 at 14:19 |

Yeah I figured there was a way to set up virtual snap zones.
That’s not too bad density wise, at that size, seems like there are tons of 1080 utlrawides floating around out there, and unless things have changed recently, you can’t get ones that are 2160 pixels in height.
